1. Biodegradable Packaging
Did you know it can take almost 1,000 years for most coffee packets to degrade in a land fill site?
Imperial Coffee is pleased to offer the Imperial Collection of premium quality coffees in biodegradable packaging. This unique packaging breaks down in only 4 years in a landfill site, yet provides the same barrier against oxygen to ensure that your coffee remains fresh. Even quicker in a composting situation! We are very proud to be the first company within our marketplace to take such a bold step to significantly reduce the environmental impact of our packaging.
2. The Imperial Coffee and Flavia Bright Idea Program
If your office utilizes the Flavia coffee brewing system, you may be interested in our ‘ Waste-to-Energy ’ Program. With this unique program you can deposit your used filter packs in specially-designated bins provided by Imperial Coffee and turn them into usable energy.
With your regular coffee delivery, your Customer Service Rep (CSR) will pick up the used filter packs and bring them back to our warehouse where they are transported to the Covanta ‘ Waste-to-Energy ’ Facility in Niagara Falls. The Niagara Falls site is one of ten ‘ Waste-to-Energy ’ power generators in North America.
Filter packs have a high waste to energy coefficient because the materials burn well resulting in high energy generation and low waste residue. Ten tons of refuse burned every hour produce 30 tons of steam. Every day 960 tons of steam and 360 megawatt hours of electricity are produced.
The end result is that the average ‘ Waste-to-Energy ’ facility produces enough electricity to light approximately 15,000 households.
3. Fair Trade and Sustainable Coffee
Fair Trade coffee is grown in a country of origin by a co-op that is certified internationally as Fair Trade and who’s objective is to ensure coffee growers earn a “ living wage ”.
We are pleased to offer our latest addition to Imperial Coffee’s Private Collection. With our new private label, we have greater control over the beans selected as well as consistency of supply, resulting in a delicious cup of coffee.
In addition, we carry brand name Fair Trade and sustainable coffees such as Starbucks, Timothy’s and Flavia.
4. Imperial Coffee Plastic bags
As the topic of plastic bags continues to heat up we have opted to eliminate the plastic bag within the coffee shipper. While it is a convenient way to hold half the packets in the case, we believe it is redundant and as a result have opted to have the coffee packets simply packed into the case itself.
5. Coffee Shippers (boxes)
With your regular coffee delivery, your CSR will be happy to pick up any Imperial Coffee shippers and return them to our warehouse to be re-used for the next day’s orders. While our coffee shippers are suitable for blue box recycling we are committed to cutting down on the numbers of boxes we require, which translates into tree preservation.
6. Compostable Drinking Cups and Plates
Imperial Coffee has taken a proactive approach to hot and cold drink cups. Our 100% compostable and biodegradable drinking cups are now available!
Solo hot drink cups are lined with a new bio-plastic made from corn grown in North America. As a result they are manufactured from 100% fully sustainable resources and are compostable, recyclable and biodegradable. Truly, the first eco-friendly hot drink cup!
Greenware cold drink cups and lids also use materials made from corn. As a result Greenware cups will break down at 150°F and 90% humidity (ideal composting conditions.) In approximately 50 days the cups will be completely gone.
As part of our commitment to offer reliable products that have significantly better environmental implications, we are pleased to continue to offer Royal Chinet as our paper plate of choice. Royal Chinet is certified as both compostable and biodegradable and has been determined to biodegrade swiftly and completely in accordance with North American standards.
7. Coffee Brewer Recycling
As coffee brewers continue to evolve and new technologies become available in the marketplace, Imperial Coffee is committed to bringing these to our customers first. This helps ensure you have the most up-to-date and suitable choices when deciding which brewers best fit your office needs. As older models become obsolete, they are stripped for parts which are re-used, and the shell of the brewer is sold as scrap metal which is then melted down and reprocessed.
8. Drinking Water Coolers
Our Water Division has taken several steps over the past few years to become more environmentally responsible. We encourage all bottled water customers to switch to filtered units, thereby reducing plastic usage, truck deliveries, ground water usage and ultimate disposal. In addition we utilize filters with a longer life and in so doing reduce waste sent to landfill. We utilize SIP Technologies sanitizer which shuts off the power to the coolers for at least 2 hours every night, thereby reducing electrical consumption. The SIP Sanitizer converts normal oxygen into activated oxygen in order to sanitize the cooler every day virtually eliminating the need for chemical sanitizers.
9. Imperial Coffee’s own backyard
Our commitment to minimize the impact of our goods and services on the environment begins at “home” in our own facility. Here is a list of some of the initiatives we’ve taken:
- The cleaners we use on our equipment and thermal servers are primarily citrus-based or oxygen-based
- All of the waste we generate out of our building is sent to a ‘ Waste-to-Energy ’ facility, as opposed to a landfill
- All of the lighting in our warehouse has been upgraded to replace older, inefficient fluorescent bulbs
- We’ve installed energy-efficient radiant heating in our warehouse
- We participate in a skid exchange service. All of our products are delivered to us on skids which are then returned for re-use
- Our delivery routes have been maximized for efficiency thereby reducing unnecessary truck emissions
